Programme Options

There are many types of programme offered by Rocking Chair Tales:

  • Curriculum Connections – where the programme includes stories related to topics being studied e.g. Victorians – ‘Oliver Twist’ or ‘The Rat-Catchers’. This alternative is best suited to when you are engaged in the study of a specific topic.

  • Reading for Enjoyment – where the selection includes familiar and traditional tales as well as some of the more current authors either popular with or unknown to the students. This option is probably most suited to when you have a Literary Focus, (like World Book Day), or during the week of your regular ‘BOOK FAIR’.

  • A Christmas Story Celebration – where a selection of stories, customs and poems are gathered, from around the world, to provide an alternative way of celebrating Christmas in school. This programme is obviously most appropriate in the weeks leading up to Christmas and in many cases has been seen as a suitable option to some of the least desirable activities of the season!

  • Parent Partners – an interactive Workshop for Parents considering how best to share the reading experience with their children.

  • Staff INSET – Interactive Story Telling / Reading for practising teachers. How do you introduce, inspire and interest your class in gaining a personal reading experience for themselves.

Book Fair

An ideal time to invite someone in to read a selection of the stories available in the Book Fair. This will raise the profile of the event whilst encouraging the children to enjoy the reading experience. It may also enhance the sales total!

Book Week

A wonderful opportunity to share a selection of stories that the children will enjoy. If you have particular authors you would like to bring to the children's attention then what better time!

Why Read & Tell Stories?

"Reading aloud is the best way to get your children hooked on books for life."

Jacqueline Wilson, Childrens Laureate

"Listening to stories has a strong influence on personal and social growth as it gives children the chance to experience things beyond their own world and to think about other people and their lives.

Hearing stories also gives children access to new words, phrases and sounds, all of which improve their spoken and written vocabulary.

Sharing a story by reading it aloud can make difficult or scary things seem safer."

Julia Eccleshare, Guardian (Children's Book Editor)
